Trolltunga Winter hike is an expedition far from the ordinary. The sun slowly rises above the snow-covered mountains. Everything around you begin to sparkle and you in the company of your guide and travel companions set out to experience Trolltunga covered in ice and snow. If you want to avoid the summer crowds – put snowshoes on and start your winter adventure.
We call our tours to Trolltunga "winter" from December to May as you will encounter a lot of snow during the entire day. During this period, it is very likely to use snowshoes or spikes on the hike. Be aware that the snow conditions can be varied through out the season, which determines the difficulty of the hike.
Price from 1550-1950 NOK (below 25y and student price). Also check our 10% discount package if staying at Trolltunga Hotel.

You meet the guide and the other participants at our store in Skjeggedal/P2 parking. After breefing about the tour, weather, checking that all are particpants are well prepare (we have rental of gear if needed), the tour starts.
The tours starts with either walking the old trail Brakufis, or the road from P2 to P3 to Mågelitopp. At Mågelitopp, we will walk among several traditional Norwegian cabins and we might put on spikes or snowshoes if necessary. After that we must “conquer” the steepest uphill of the hike - Gryteskar.
After the uphill, wehve easy up and down terrain until we reach the "Troll's Tongue", with spectacular natur views along the way. You can admire the snowy mountains, the Ringedalen valley with its steep mountain walls and frozen waterfalls, and amazing formations that the wind has carved into snow. Can there be a better reward? Naturally, there are several breaks on the way to refresh yourself and simply enjoy the atmosphere within the group while your guides explain more about local history and nature. Listen to the guides' advices, they know all the best photo spots! Soon enough you will arrive to Trolltunga in its winter suit rising above the "Lake of the Rings" and with Folgefonna glacier in the distance. Here it is time for photoshoot and more stories.
The return back home is often a lot easier, we have a good snowtrail to walk on, more downhill, good memories, new hiking friends to talk with, in some cases we get a nice sunset walking down Gryteskar. And then the great finale, sliding down the road from P3 to P2/4 km on a snowracer. A fun and easy ending of the day!
Be aware that the weather during the Norwegian winter is unpredictable, it can change at any time! Trolltunga Active has arranged guided winter tours to Trolltunga since 2015 and our experienced and professional guides have the utmost respect for the mountains. They will share their knowledge with you, show you how to prepare and hike safely during winter and how to 'read' the weather. Your safety is our priority!
That is why on the iciest days, we cannot guarantee that it will be safe to go down on the rock itself. We will make sure to show you alternative and equally beautiful photo spots and that you will feel like a true explorer after this one-day adventure.

7:30 am: Meet your guide and travel companions at the Trolltunga Active Base in Skjeggedal 20, 5770 Tyssedal. Beware the road to Skjeggedal is your first adventure for today, depending on the weather conditions good winter tires, spikes or snow chains are crucial.
During the winter, the conditions in the mountains are unpredictable. They can change from minute to minute. Temperature can be deceiving as the wind plays an important role in how cold it feels. Similarly, the snow conditions have a great impact on how easy or hard the hike gets.
A general thumb rule is: prepare for the worst conditions but do not overload your backpack, weight matters greatly when it is about saving energy. Use the onion look: layers that can easily be taken on and off. On a sunny day remember that the snow reflects the sun light which makes it stronger – suncream and sunglasses are essential!
We do not cancel tours due to bad weather. Even if the conditions look harsh, they can also turn out to be much better once we reach the mountains. The only times we cancel is when the bad weather becomes dangerous weather. We will inform you in case of cancellation. Please read our cancellation policies for more information.
Please make sure to leave a bit of space in your backpack for the micro spikes and be aware that you should be able to strap snowshoes onto the backpack you are bringing.
You can rent certain pieces of equipment on site: rain pants and jackets, hiking boots, backpacks.
