About the activity

Meet your guide and travel companions at the Trolltunga Active Base in Skjeggedal at 14.00.

In wintertime all hikes to Trolltunga start on P2 parking in Skjeggedal. Normally, it is necessary to walk with micro spikes or snowshoes a large part of the tour, that is why the hike during this season is more challenging.

We start the tour with a 5 km uphill hike to the Trolltunga Gateway Cabin, settle in have some light food. Then outdoor winter activities- skijump, snow racer slidingcompetition, building of snow cave/snowman and more.

Followed by a good dinner and social timespending in front of the fire.

Next morning we start our adventure to Trolltunga around 08.00. Soon you will find so many marvels along the way to Trolltunga - incredibleviews on faraway snowy mountains, the Ringedalen valley and amazing formationsthat the wind has carved into snow. Even yoursimple sandwich for lunch tastes like a Michelin Star dish up here. We keep on going to see what is coming next. You willbe rewarded with Trolltunga in its winter suit majestically rising above thehalf-frozen Ringedal lake. The clouds rolling in, fighting with the beam of the sun.

Photo shoot at our"Rockstar" Trolltunga with you and the spectacular view. Then the walk back home, easier, more downhill, and hopefully a walk filled with good memeries. Return to Skjeggedal around 7-8om. Ifpossible, we use snow racers for the return down to the P2 parking

Be aware that the weather during the Norwegian winter is unpredictable, itcan change at any time. This isnature, it is pure and real up here! But do not worry, your guides are educated in reading the mountainconditions and has a lot of experience in this terrain. Your safety is our priority! Thatis why on the iciest days, we cannot guarantee that itwill be safe to go down on the rock itself. We will make sure to showyou alternative and equally beautiful photo spots and that you will feel like atrue explorer after this one-day expedition.

Weather

During the winter, the conditions in the  mountains are unpredictable. They can change from minute to minute.  Temperature can be deceiving as the wind plays an important role in how cold  it feels. Similarly, the snow conditions have a great impact on how easy or  hard the hike gets.

A general thumb rule is: prepare for the  worst conditions but do not overload your backpack, weight matters greatly  when it is about saving energy. Use the onion look: layers that can easily be  taken on and off. On a sunny day remember that the snow reflects the sun  light which makes it stronger – suncream and sunglasses are essential!

We do not cancel tours due to bad weather. Even if the conditions look harsh, they can also turn out to be much better  once we reach the mountains. The only  times we cancel is when the bad weather becomes dangerous weather. We will  inform you in case of cancellation. Please read our cancellation policies for  more information.

FAQ

The long-term weather forecast looks bad. Is it safe to hike?

The long-term weather forecast can be unreliable. We rely on the forecast 2-3 days in advance. Besides, old Norwegian wisdom teaches us: there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. If you are booked on a hike with us and the weather conditions are so bad that they might threaten our safety, we will cancel the tour.

Cancellation due to bad weather. Will I get a refund?

If you choose to not show up for your tour, there is no refund. If we cancel due to the weather, you get a full refund or change to another day. This might happen due to high avalanche risk or strong winds. Please read our General Terms and Conditions for more information.

Is the meeting at Trolltunga Hotel the night before the hike mandatory?

No, however it is highly recommended. This is where you meet one of our guides and your travel companions in person. The guide will tell you about tomorrow’s weather conditions, what to wear, what to bring and safety precautions. You are welcome to ask any questions that you have.

Can I rent equipment at the Trolltunga Active Base?

Yes, you can. We rent out wind- and waterproof/-resistant jackets, pants, shoes and backpacks.

There is a minimum of two people on the tours. What happens if I am the only one?

We will ask you to move your booking to another day and you will be refunded if this is not possible. Alternatively, you can wait until the evening before the hike and see if there are any last-minute bookings. If that does not happen and you still want to hike, you must pay for two.

Do I need a guide to hike Trolltunga outside the main season?

It is not mandatory, but it is recommended to use a guide in the period of 1 October – 31 May. This is due to uncertainty related to weather, snow, rivers, which previously have led to several rescue operations.

Can I bring my dog on a guided tour?

Notify us in advance. It depends on the other guests in the group, and the guides of that tour. We also have guides with dogs, and it is important for them to know about this case in advance. This is a long hike and is not suitable for some breeds especially small dogs. The Via Ferrata tours are not for dogs.

I have food allergies, is that a problem?

We have many food options for those with different allergies. Notify us in advance.
